Dear Urnston Family -

I am a distant cousin of yours & have an old letter from Mrs LeRoy Urmston from Jan 1936 to my sister in law Mrs Joe Clark concerning family relations.
At this late date I have become interested in the family genealogy and would like so much to find out what you know.
Mrs Urmston wrote of getting copies of deeds and wills from Virginia Court records. Do any of you still have these?
Do please let me Know if this reaches any of you.
     Sincerely
          Helen Clark Lindgren

Lindgren Family - Brian Lindgren's Letters Home - 23 JUN 68 - page 1

                                         23 Jun 68

HI DAD, MOM, AND K,

I'M FEELING PRETTY GOOD TODAY. I AM ON THE AFTERNOON WATCH FROM 1200 - 1800 AND IT'S GOING TO RAIN IN ABOUT 10  MINUTES. WE CAN SEE THE STORMS COMING AND SOMETIMES WE GET ABOUT 1/2 HOURS NOTICE. UNTIL ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO, THE SKIES WERE VIRTUELLY CLOUD FREE BUT NOW WE HAVE CLOUDS ALL THE TIME. THE CLOUDS DON'T KEEP THE TEMPERATURE DOWN MUCH, THOUGH.

I THINK THE ISLAND HAS JUST BEEN BESET BY ONE OF THE SEVEN PLAGUES. THEY ARE FAIRLY LARGE BEETLE TYPE BUGS CALLED SACADAS. THEY AREN'T SO BAD IN THEMSELVES BUT THEY MAKE AN INFERNAL RACKET THAT IS MUCH LOUDER AND PENETRATING THAN CRIKETS. THEY REALLY BOTHER ME BECAUSE JUST ONE STARTS AND A SECOND LATER IT SOUND LIKE A FEW THOUSAND (CONSERVATIVE ESITMATE) OF THEM ARE SCREAMING.
OOOH, I FEEL SO GOOD. I JUST GOT NEWS THAT I WILL GET MY WEEKS LEAVE THE 12 OF JULY. I WILL GO TO HONG KONG ON THE 13,14,15, AND THE REST OF THE WEEK WILL BE SPENT BROWSING AROUND MANILA AND BAGUIO CITY. I WOULD SURE LIKE TO GET A NICE TYPEWRITER IF IT WERE CHEAP ENOUGH IN HONG KONG. I AM GOING TO GET A NEW CAMERA AND I'M TRYING TO TALK MYSELF INTO A TELEPHOTO LENS.
I AM BECOMING VERY INTEREASTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY, AND I THINK THAT I MAY PERSUE IT FUTHER BACK IN THE STATES. I JUST HOPE THAT I DON'T LOSE INTEREAST AFTER I BUY THE TELEPHOTO LENS ($80.00)
KAREN. I'M SORRY. I FORGOT THAT "LIGHT MY FIRE" AND "DIRTY WATER" WERE ON LP'S. SO DON'T SEND THEM IN THAT CASE. HOWEVER, I AMSENDING MONEY FOR A NEW NEEDLE. I THINK YOU WILL HAVE TO GET SOMEBODY TO TAKE THE OLD NEEDLE OFF AND DETERMINE THE PROPER TYPE OF NEW NEEDLE. THE NEEDLE TYPE IS DETERMINED BY THE TYPE OF CARTRIDGE. I BELIEVE THAT I HAVE A SONOTONE CARTRIDGE IN THERE NOW AND THE BOX WITH THE CARTRIDGE TYPE NO. ON IT IS IN MY GREY FILE BOX IN MY BEDROOM OR WHEREVER MOM HAS IT HIDDEN. MAYBE KEITH RICHARDSON WILL DO IT FOR YOU.

          Love Ya All,

Test" coming up then and I would sure feel more at ease if he were here.
What is Dad doing now. Wish I had an Accutron!
          Karen,

In most cases, if a boy takes the time and energy to bug a girl, he usually likes her. If he didn't like you, he probably wouldn't waste his time on you. Hope that clears things up a little bit.
Any new good records come out yet?

Love You All,

Hi Mom,

I am trying to make an effort to write more. If I can get a good typewriter cheaply enough to make it worth buying over here, it might increase my correspondence for I like to type.
I have just finished reviewing two of your letters and decided I'd better answer them. - Made a New Year's Resolution not to let a letter go unanswered.
I believe I told you I received picture and tape from All. Thank you for crossword books and stationary. I've been doing crosswords till they come out of my ears. Can't look another in the face. Don't bother to send TV Guides anymore. I received an announcement from either Guideposts or Reader's Digest. Think Guideposts. Did you say Wilbur sent Playboy Subscription? No word as yet. Thank him anyway.

Mom, if you haven't done so already, please send me word on checking account. Also, here is your telephone credit card which was sent to me.
I promise I'll let you know if anything exciting happens here. I hope I did tell you I made ET2.

     Dear Dad, Mom, & K

I didn't realize that I was this hard to get info out of. At least, I'll kill anybody by talking them to death, which one or two people here are very adept at! I hope my pictures cleared up any questions as to what this place looks like. A picture shows so much more than a letter can.
Everyone keeps pumping me for info on what is going on here. Except for an occasional happening, we just exist from week to week trying to pass time as painlessly as possible.
I didn't get K's records out last week. They will be going out on the 18th. with the exception of the LP's I asked for, don't bother sending any other records. I gave [?] the idea of the tape recorder. Too much money and I won't use it that much when I get home. I will definately be getting a stereo FM receiver

Hi Karen,

I appreciate your sending the records. I haven't received any yet though. I got the letter last week so maybe I get records this week if they didn't get broken. Silly girl, now what was my favorites before I left. "Different Drum" of course. Maybe you could go down to Allied to buy or talk them out of a record mailer. tell them its for your brother, overseas. I will send records back as soon as possible.
I hope you got your birthday present. You haven't said. Let me know.

     Mom,
I may not be sending as much money home as I thought. While overseas, the government will pay 10% on deposits. Sounds like a good deal. Also, will be buying some stereo gear. I planned on

Hi Folks & K
What is gnu with you. I am doing the same thing I always do on the mid- writing letters.
I guess we did have a little excitement this week. 1) We had an air drop. Thats is where the plane doesn't land but parachutes supplies in. They dropped us a part for our projector on their way to another island. 2) We had a ship go aground on the reef today. The ship got off and is no danger of sinking but they have no propulsion system now. 3) Tonight I saw the largest falling star I have ever seen. Falling stars are a common occurance here, but the one tonight was huge. It fell almost into the sea and it had a long blue tail and most of the sky glowed blue. I mean it was big!

Rushing off a note tonight because plane coming tomorrow instead of Thursday. Not too much new news except I might make promotion to ET2 sometime in January. That means a good pay raise. Also, after Feb. 14 I will  have been in two years so that another good pay raise.
Karen doesn't have to send all 45's at once. Spread them out so she won't feel too short. Also, please have her make a list of my LP's and indicate "mono" or "stereo".

complicated to explain in letter. -Just thought I let you know what I'm going to do with some of omy money.
Starting about March or April I am going to start an allotment to mom so she can make deposits for me. For you see, we get paid in cash, not by check. Therefore I am sending my bank book home plus checking deposit slips. Put deposit slips in small red cardboard box in grey file cabinet in my room. Bank book goes there too. Got an idea for Christmas & Birthday present. Pre-recorded stereo tapes. Karen will know what I like. Mostly same as records (LP's) I bought on TJB.

There are some real characters on this station. You'll have to wait for pictures to see them. Sorry! About 75 natives on island. All friendly - NO headhunters. (There are some!)
I should be getting out of here about Nov 20 1968. Gee whiz! that's only 361 days! My, how time does fly!
We are too far away for normal radio reception so there is no music (noise to you) Therefore, I think a tape recorder is a sane investment so that I won't become any more feeble minded than I am now. You may ask, why doesn't he get a record player? That it too

The boy I told you about, George Martel, is going to get us dates with his cousin and her girl friend. This is going to be quite nice because I've hardly talked to a girl in the almost three months I have been here. Don't tell Kathy unless she asks because I told her I was going to date if I could so I don't see any reason to press the subject. I know I'd rather she didn't make a point of it to me when she dates.

Hi Folks and Karen,
I got out and a little walking last weekend. I changed into my civies and just started walking. The country is really beautiful. I walked down near the river and everything is so green and pretty.
Did Kathy show you the shirts she sent me? I was really surprized to get them. I wasn't expecting anything like that at all. She said she wanted to come to some party to meet our relitives but she had to babysit or something. Anyway I told her I thought she would really enjoy meeting Florie, because Florie is always so interested in who I have for a girl friend (I didn't tell her this part)

Monday we started classes and I know everything that is going on. Therefore I have a little more time at night than the rest of the guys. I help them with their homework.

Today I bought a real nice camera for $61.50.

Hi Gang,
Guess What?! I won the company achedemic award. It was based on the scores of the tests we took when we were in our first week of training. Friday, at graduation, myself and the other winners (different catagories) will go up in front of the company and be presented our awards.
I am sorry to make it short but I have to get to bed to be rested up for fire fighting tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it. Talk to you Friday.
                                    Love,
                                          Brian

can be saving a lot of money which I can put toward a new car sometime. If I want to go somewhere it will be cheaper to take the train or something. I'll probably spend a few week-ends looking around New York and Washington D.D. Besides if I have the car I might be tempted to go somewhere instead of studying.
I am Going to make it through this school.
Got to Go now, almost "lights out".

     Hi Mom,

Just a quick note. I was real tickled when I got a letter from Dad today. In it (I don't know if you know) were two things, Pam's engagement picture and a card from church camp, 1960. The card is a statement of abstanance of alcoholic beverages.
He must have found it in my Bible. You have nothing to worry about though. I'm not going to drink and I'm not going to smoke. A statement of fact. I have not had one ciggarette since I've been here. Gotta Go Love

This week, the fifth, we will have our phase and knot tests. In our sixth week we work in the galley, seventh week - mostly rifle range and eighth week - mostly fire fighting. Gotta Go now.
Love you all,
