The Soldier Farm
Maybe you have heard of soldier farms? This was another form of torp. You might see the title Soldattorp, Ryttartorp, Båtmanstorp, or even Knekttorp in the records. These were small farms used for the soldiers of the Allotment System starting in the 1680’s. Primarily these farms provided residence for the soldier / or sailor (in the navy) and their family. The farm was too small to be self-sustaining so the local farmers with large farms were obligated to provide agricultural products and use of draft animals. In some parts of Sweden the soldier farm was given to the soldier at the end of military service. More commonly, the soldier and his family had to move after the discharge (or death) of the soldier.

This is the 1836 - 1841 census that now shows the family has moved, and has added 2 more children.

This household census documents the Plato family in Norratorp [North Farm].
They live in the BackStuga - or the house in the rear.
Jonas, Katarina and Carl Peter are all listed.
The one change to Carl Peter is that he has been vaccinated for Small Pox.
A daughter Johanna Helena, was born on the 28 of September 1837. Johanna was also vaccinated for Small Pox.
Another daughter, Christina has been born on the 17th of October 1839.

Police late yesterday recovered the car of Marshall S. Leve, manager of the Ritz Theater, 5213 Wilshire Boulevard, in which he was abducted Saturday night from his home by two bandits, driven to the theater and there compelled to open the safe, from which the robbers tood $1800. A similar attempt several weeks ago netted the bandits nothing.

After looting the safe the robbers took Leve back to his home, bound him with strips of adhesive tape and drove away in his machine.
