Lindgren Family - Duane Lindgren - Remembrences - 3rd draft

Brian was "playing with matchess and somehow the fire escaped" to the neighbors wood fence. They started to "put" the fire out with the hose, and then the fire department came to put it out. I don't think anyone knew that I started the fire. I never got in trouble. [It was] on Greywood street, in Lakewood Village.

I (Brian) went back to Lakewood and we passed Greywood street and I recognized the old house, and then we went over to the friends, we told them they had a house on Greywood. It was $1,015 house in the mid 40's. It was in a subdivision of single lot builds.

Duane
Dad was an air raid warden during the war, and they built a station where I set the fire in the lot.

Dad would go around to make sure everyone had covered their windows.

The government told people that during an attack, to cover themselves with their mattress or get under the table. Duane felt a wet spot on his chest. He yelled, "I'm hit! I'm Hit!" Mom hadn't cleared the table of liquids.

Dad and a neighbor built a bombshelter in back which was 8 feet deep and 10-15 feet long. They brought huge thick timbers to use as a roof. The first year it rained the bomb shelter was

When we lived in Nutwood, the truck that Dad and Duane would drive out to the dump was a 1929 Chevrolet pick up

The 41 Chevy truck had a windshield that cranked out. I went to throw bottles into the pit and Anne hit me in the head. Thank heavens I didn't.

Carl and Helen/Pat had a Cocker Spaniel which was named Doodle, and probably came into the family when Carl and Helen/Pat were living in Arkanas. Karen says: "I remember one story Mom told me about the dog's paws being burned walking across hoot asphalt and how Daddy would pick up the dog to take him outside, he felt so sorry for him

Duane and "The Street Sweepers".
Our club was named "The Street Sweepers". Duane joined the club before he joined the army in 1954. He had the 41 Ford pick up truck, which was an oxidized green color, with a 353 cubic inch, overhead valve, Oldsmobile engine, V8 motor. A welder on Ball road put it together. At some time later, I blew up the rear end, the Ford rear end had something that sheered off. It had trouble with the transmission so we put an Oldsmobile transmission in it. Then had to change the drive shafts - and would only accept an open tube drive line. (Oldsmobile/Mercury) There was so much torque that the partial bars broke, and the bars separated from the differential.

The Street Sweepers would get a Halloween car for 1938 buick 4 door for 30-40 bucks.

The guy who was driving said: "Lets try to see how fast we could turn a corner at 40 miles an hour. It was a right hand corner. The lug nuts pulled right through the holes on the rim, and lost the wheel.

Duane was 19 years old when he went into the army, for 2 years and then then 1 year active reserve. He got out in 1959.

Swedish grandma story

Nice sweet ladly - had 7-8 kids - 1

She was ironing in the alcove when she heard her daughters talking how much fun sex was. She asked "It's supposed to be fun?"

"Oopie" was her exclamation.

She made delicious rice pudding everytime us kids showed up.

Per Karen "when I was pregnant with Travis, Denis and I drove up to see Duane and Gery. Denis decided we should go to Yosemite for the day, so we drive over there and Duane kept driving around the valley and asking me if I felt any labor twinges? He kept leaning over,  looking at me and saying "Are you sure you don't feel anything? wouldn't it be cool to say you were born in Yosemite?"

Duane met two kings, probably while working in the private - the King of Saudi Arabia and the King of Jordan, as well as the Shah of Iran before he was deposed! The Shah went to their project in Tabriz and Duane showed him around, ( He also met the Empress whom he said was extremely beautiful.)

Another interesting thing about living in Iran was that he and Geri got picked up be a Soviet border patrol station!

Yes, they were detained for eight hours for question until the Soviets could find someone who spoke English. It turned out to be a doctor who had treated Geri for a cut hand, so he said they were not suspicious Americans, just dumb ones who went out driving in a four-wheel- drive without identification papers.

Duane passed on 7 September 2023, just 2 days short of the 1 year anniversary of Brian's passing. He was living in a nursing home for approximately 1 year plus. It was close to Karen's house so she could she him fairly frequently.
